From Dave Walos, Handicap Chairman. 3/30/2025
Hello, my name is Dave Walos, and I will be your Handicap Chairman for the 2025 golfing season.
In this area of the country, our active season for 2025 will be from April 15th to October 31st.
The scoring season is determined by the New York State Golf Association and the Buffalo District and establishes the dates for a particular area to record your rounds played in that area. For instance, if you play a round of golf on April 14th at a golf course in the Buffalo area, you should not enter that score into the computer. If you play a round of golf on the 15th of April, that round should be entered into the computer for handicap purposes.
The name of the handicap system that the Deerwood Men’s Club uses is called the ehandicap Network
and is the trademark of Northern Systems Inc. It can be found at http://www.ehandicap.net. This
system records daily scores and computes a daily handicap based on the score entered. It is very similar
to the World Handicap System (ex. Ghin) with some subtle differences. Once you are a member, you
may enter scores at our computer at the golf course, or you may also enter scores from your phone or
home computer.
To obtain a handicap, you must have a minimum of three (3) 18-hole rounds recorded to achieve a
temporary handicap. Entering more rounds allows for a more accurate handicap index. The amount of
scores used in the calculations will change until you eventually reach 20 rounds. At the time the
computer will always use 8 of the last 20 rounds to calculate your handicap index.
When entering a score for the Deerwood Golf Course, we require that every score on each hole be
recorded. The computer program will automatically calculate your maximum allowable score for that
hole which will not adversely affect your handicap. The maximum allowable number on each hole is a
double bogie plus your handicap allowance for that hole. In other words, it’s par for the hole, plus 2,
plus whatever allowable handicap you have for that hole.
If you are a new member and have an established handicap from a club you belonged to last year,
please provide me with a recognized handicap “card” and I will enter those scores in the computer. You
should always post your scores to get the most accurate handicap index. This also includes 9-hole
scores. A 9-hole score will be combined with another 9-hole score to get a differential for those 18 holes.
You may also record scores from other courses that you have played. Just enter them as an “away
round”.
I have just mentioned some of the rules for handicapping and obtaining a handicap index. Please
review the “Tournaments” section of this website for entering a score for a tournament round. If you
have any questions concerning handicaps, or your handicap data, please give me a call.
Have a great season!
